Yi-Li Wu's research on the history of Chinese medicine focuses on the multiple intersections of society, culture, and the body, with special emphasis on the late imperial period (16th-19th centuries). Her publications include Reproducing Women: Medicine, metaphor, and childbirth in late imperial China (University of California Press, 2010), and she has also published articles on medical illustration, forensic medicine, the treatment of wounds, and Chinese views of Western anatomical science. She is currently completing a manuscript on the history of traumatology in China. Her areas of teaching and supervision expertise include late imperial Chinese history, the history of global medicines, and the history of gender, health, and the body in East Asia.
