Five University of Michigan faculty members have been named Arthur F. Thurnau Professors in recognition of their contributions to undergraduate education. Two of these extraordinary professors are also IRWG affiliates! Gary W. Harper and Lisa H. Harris were among the newly honored faculty who will hold the Thurnau title for the duration of their careers at U-M.

Gary Harper is professor of health behavior and health education and of global public health in the School of Public Health. He is also the co-director and a co-principal investigator (with Anna Kirkland) for our Student Opportunities for AIDS/HIV Research (SOAR), the only pipeline program of its kind in the United States. Many SOAR scholars wrote testimonials of support for Gary's Thurnau nomination. As Anna Kirkland noted in a message to SOAR participants, "We are thrilled that Gary has gotten this well-deserved university level recognition. We see every day how special he is as a Michigan professor, colleague, mentor, and friend."

Lisa Harris is the F. Wallace and Janet Jeffries Collegiate Professor of Reproductive Health, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Medical School, and professor of women’s and gender studies. She is a longtime affiliate with IRWG, offering her expertise on reproductive justice at IRWG events and working groups.
