In 2015, Dr. Cheryl Moyer (Associate Professor in Learning Health Sciences and Obstetrics and Gynecology) and Dr. April Bell (then a Fogarty-funded fellow at the University of Michigan) were funded by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender to conduct a pilot study exploring the shift from surgical to self-induced medical abortion in two fishing villages in urban Accra, Ghana. Data from the project have been presented at several national and international meetings, and two manuscripts have been published or submitted for publication.

In January 2020, Dr. Moyer and colleagues met in Accra, Ghana, to discuss the findings and brainstorm next steps. Dr. Moyer then visited the head of the Family Health Division of the Ghana Health Service in Accra to discuss the findings as well as a new project with the Dodowa Health Research Center and the School of Nursing that looks to boost health literacy among pregnant women through group-based antenatal care.

Drs. Cheryl Moyer (Medicine) and Jody Lori (Nursing) from the University of Michigan met with the Director of the Family Health Division of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Isabella Sagoe-Moses, and Dr. John Williams, Director of the Dodowa Health Research Centre, which is part of the Ghana Health Service.
