Professor Smock's research interests span and integrate the sub-fields of family demography and social stratification. Her research focuses on changing family patterns, economic inequality, gender, race-ethnicity, and their reciprocal implications. For example, her past research has focused on the economic consequences of divorce and marriage, cohabitation, nonresident fatherhood, child support, remarriage, single-mother families, and racial/ethnic variation in family patterns.
