Kyla Brathwaite

Assistant Professor of Communication and Media

Dr. Kyla Noni Brathwaite is an Assistant Professor and LSA Collegiate Fellow in the Department of Communication & Media at the University of Michigan. Dr. Brathwaite’s research broadly explores the social and psychological implications of communication technology use. Primarily a quantitative and experimental researcher, Dr. Brathwaite’s work takes inspiration from various domains of social scientific research including, objectification, media effects, and social influence literatures. Her work focuses particularly on the intersections of race and gender and how these identities shape users’ interactions with both technology and other users. Dr. Brathwaite’s research has been published in leading communication and interdisciplinary journals, including Communication Monographs, Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, New Media & Society, and Social Media + Society.
