Katharine McCabe is an NSF-funded Postdoctoral Fellow in Law, Gender, and Health within the Institute for Research on Women and Gender at the University of Michigan. She completed her Ph.D. in Sociology at the University of Illinois at Chicago in 2019. She researches gender, race, and sexuality, medical sociology, the politics of reproduction, legal and institutional responses to deviance, and substance use and addiction.

Katharine’s current research examines medico-legal responses to pregnant substance users. This project interrogates how punitive forms of health governance become enacted across multiple systems (healthcare, child welfare, and private, non-profit systems), the ways that race, gender, and class shape these processes, and the consequences of medico-legal hybridity on the individuals subject to this form of governance. She is also currently examining state policies on child welfare responses to maternal substance use and is conducting a study of regional reproductive healthcare responses to the opioid crisis.

Katharine’s research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and has been published in Social Science and Medicine, The Journal of Women’s Health, Perspectives on Sexual and Reproductive Health, and Sex Roles.

Katharine has received a teaching award from the University of Illinois at Chicago and has taught courses in Social Problems, Sexuality, and Health and Medicine.
