Sam Farmer is a cultural studies scholar and PhD candidate in the Department of Slavic Languages & Literatures at the University of Michigan, and is pursuing certificates in Museum Studies, LGBTQ Studies, and Graduate Teaching; they also hold a MA in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. Their current dissertation project focuses on socialist heritage and non-normative interpretations of family history in contemporary culture of the former Yugoslavia/Balkans since the Great Recession (~2008). This dissertation utilizes primary sources from literature and film in Macedonian and Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian as well as case studies of community-engaged museum practices to place the Yugoslav region within local and global context.
